Welcome back to Baking with Jonathan, hosted by Rapt Media VP of Engineering, Jonathan Woodard. Follow our interactive baking video to learn how to make some awesome holiday cookies. But first, help Jonathan pick an apron...
Pick an apron...
Hm ... this one's a little too feminine for Jonathan.
Oof, this one's a little small for Jonathan.
Awesome! Good choice!
Do you want to make gluten-free or regular cookies? Take your pick...
This recipe makes about 4 dozen cookies. You'll need the zest of one lemon, 0.5 cup of sugar, 2.5 cups of sifted flour, 0.25 teaspoon of salt, 0.5 lb. butter, and 3 egg yolks. Explore the rest of the video to get the full recipe.
So you've chosen to go sans-gluten? You'll need 0.75 cup of sifted confectioner's sugar, 0.5 cup butter, 1 tsp. vanilla extract, 0.25 teaspoon of almond extract, 1 egg, and 1.5 cup of gluten-free all-purpose baking mix. Explore the rest of the video to get the full recipe.
So you want to stick to the classics and make a standard Cutout Cookie. Can’t go wrong there. Cut your shapes with a cookie cutter, transfer to a baking sheet, and let chill in the freezer for 15 minutes. Bake for 9 to 12 minutes. But when do you remove them from the oven?
Jonathan loves using his thumbs for other things besides typing code. To make the Thumbprints, tear off pieces of dough, rolling into walnut-sized balls, and then in chopped nuts. Use your thumb to make an indent, and bake for 9 to 15 minutes. But when do you remove them from the oven?
Ah, the fancy-lookin’ Linzer. Sure to impress. With your Linzer-style cookie cutter, cut out equal amounts of the window and windowless shapes and transfer to a baking sheet. Chill in the freezer for 15 minutes, and then bake for 9 to 12 minutes.
So you think the cookies need one more minute, eh? You sure about that?
"Oh @#$%&!"
Walking in a sugar wonderland. If you can resist eating the cookies before you decorate them, dust your snowflakes with powdered sugar.
Let’s make these Thumbprints more jolly with jelly. Add your jam by the spoonful to the indents in the cookie. Voila!
It’s time to get fancy with these Linzers. Melt your jam, and then brush it on the windowless cookies, topping with the window cookie. Fill the holes with more jam, and then get crazy with the powdered sugar.
